Courses

Salla Luhtasela, BA (Hons) Ceramic Design, Central Saint Martins

We offer courses at pre-degree, undergraduate and postgraduate level in art, design, communication, fashion, media and performing arts.

Each of our six colleges provides its own set of courses, and its own particular culture. Our academic staff bring their unique interests and expertise to the classroom. Their styles of teaching range from well-established traditional methods to those that embrace the very latest technologies.

In the UK, if you want to study a practice-based course at undergraduate level (such as fashion design or photography) but don’t have a background in the area, you’ll usually need to complete a one-year pre-degree program first (also known as a foundation year).

A foundation year helps you use your existing knowledge to develop your skills, broaden your academic experience and build your body of work. It’s rare that students are accepted into an undergraduate course at UAL without having first completed one of these programs.

After the successful completion of this year, you can apply to a three year BA program. An undergraduate degree program at UAL will generally take four years to complete, much the same as Canada’s post-secondary education system.

We have a range of full-time pre-degree courses, some designed specifically for international students. Find out more about our pre-degree courses on our UK site.

To study an undergraduate course at UAL you’ll usually need to have completed a pre-degree course. Take a look at the section above for more information.

Most of our undergraduate courses are at bachelor’s level – BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons) – which means they represent 360+ credits and generally take three years of full-time study.

We also offer a small number of courses leading to other qualifications:

  • Foundation Degrees (FdA): These are two-year, full-time undergraduate-level vocational courses that focus on work-based learning. After studying an FdA course, you are able to apply for a bridging program which would enable you to progress to the final year of the appropriate BA (Hons) course.
  • Integrated Masters: Our Integrated Masters courses comprise three years of undergraduate-level study, followed by a fourth year of postgraduate-level study, leading to a masters qualification.

Our six colleges offer an unrivalled range of taught postgraduate courses. In addition to masters courses (MA, M ARCH, MBA, MSc, MFA) we offer professional certificates and diplomas. Many of our postgraduate taught courses are offered with flexible study options, and there may be the option to extend the study of a masters course to two years, rather than one.

UAL also offers both theoretical and practice-based research programs leading to an MPhil or PhD awarded in any subject area where the University can provide appropriately qualified supervision.

In 2014 we were ranked first in the Art and Design: History, Practice and Theory category of the Research Excellence Framework (REF).
